Matthewdavid’s Mindflight offers a different kind of listening, one to which I’m a little accustomed, but still rather hesitant to accept outright Mindflight appears to be the conceptual culmination of Matthewdavid’s interests in new age music, a vague and reductive misnomer for certain subsets of experimental music that for decades now has conjured an oddly specific image of kooky, store-bought spirituality, appropriated pretensions and the sort of easy listening records that are sold at big box stores and come adorned with generic nature.

Today, he releases his most ambitious and expansive release in that vein to date, the double LP Trust the Guide and Glide.

Matthewdavid's Mindflight is Heart Music. It's a record of beauty that has evolved from explorations into his deepest emotions, visions and imagination. The Flights were most directly inspired by his profound connection with Michael Stearns' Planetary Unfolding (Continuum Montage 1981). You can feel that Trust is it's Brother. Stearns speaks of Dreams, Resonance, Unity, and Ecstasy. Matthew adds that this journey has been one of Healing, Discovery, Finding, and Transformation

Much like those musical visionaries, it's heavily intellectual music that poses as spiritual music. Likewise, the album cover is designed by the same artist who designed the 2014 compilation of New Age music "I Am The Center". Even the cardboard cover of the vinyl release is the same material, as are the protective sleeves for the records themselves. It's almost as if Matthew David created an exegesis of "I Am The Center".

His label is Leaving Records and his music is Matthewdavid's Mindflight, the latest project from which is the first full-length release in the year-old Modern New Age series. But hidden within that thicket of texture and uplifting mood is the detailed work of a careful producer with a purpose
