Red is the seventh studio album by English progressive rock group King Crimson, released in 1974 by Island Records in the United Kingdom and by Atlantic Records in the United States. It was their last studio recording of the 1970s and the last before lead member Robert Fripp temporarily disbanded the group. Though their lowest-charting album at the time, spending only one week in the UK charts, Red has received critical acclaim.

Red was the first Crimson album to retain the compact, five-song structure of Crimson King and the only to match its impact or influence. Both albums flow cinematically from rock epics to imagistic ballads, with heady mood pieces in between. Both feel like windows into new, sometimes frightening worlds. Both feature prominent contributions from t Ian McDonald, who co-wrote all the songs on the band’s debut and appears as a guest on Red. Still, Red is no retread.

Red is the seventh studio album by English progressive rock group King Crimson, released in 1974 by Island Records in the UK and by Atlantic Records in the US. It was their last studio recording before the lead member Robert Fripp temporarily disbanded the group.

The fact that it was put together by a band in its death throes makes it all the more impressive an achievement. Indeed, Red does improve in some respects on certain aspects of the previous album - including "Starless," a cousin to the prior album's title track - and only the lower quality of the vocal compositions keeps this from being as strongly recommended as its two predecessors.

King Crimson has remained the most consistent classic progressive band up to this day. They never became overambitious as Yes did, or disowned their original sound for pop flavour like Genesis. This consistency is only a greater achievement considering their (especially in the ‘70s) ever-changing formation. Their fourth album Islands, the last with Peter Sinfield as a lyricist, is the most obvious candidate for worst Crim album, but still had its unique transcendent style despite being poorly improvised. Yet, in the midst of the meltdown, it’s surprisingly their hardest-hitting, most cohesive album they released up to this point.
