Guy is the 1988 eponymous debut studio album by American R&B band Guy. Released on June 13, 1988 by Uptown Records, It was produced by group founder Teddy Riley and manager Gene Griffin. The album peaked at number 27 on the Billboard 200 chart. In July 1994, it was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, for shipments of two million copies in the United States.

Chronlogically first in the set is Archangel, which immediately demonstrates the Maddin look - movies that seem from another era, particularly the cusp between the late silent films and the early talkies. The story deals with an American in the Russian town of Archangel at the end of World War I. He becomes convinced a local woman is his one-time lover who's actually dead.

John Vanderslice has been making music since his teenage years, but it was the early ‘90s when one of his bands, MK Ultra, started gaining national attention. In 1997, he founded his own recording studio, Tiny Telephone, in San Francisco. Vanderslice: I would say that what happens is that there’s definitely a physical cost. Sometimes it feels like you’re doing physical damage to your body after six or seven weeks. But the shows are awesome.

There’s never any faulting Scott Solter’s production or Vanderslice’s meticulous composition: Even on the most sparse sounding numbers, like the ominous Forest Knolls and the frankly stunning chamber-pop ballad Too Much Time, subtle layers of electronic noise and multi-tracked instruments give the songs the rich texture they need to overcome their steady midtempo stride. These limitations ended up working to the album’s benefit. Having a limited amount of time kind of forces you as an artist to make decisions, Beam says. You can get really hung up on what the right choices are, and that’s kind of an endless question.
