The central theme is redemption through love. Wagner conducted the premiere at the Königliches Hoftheater in Dresden in 1843. Wagner claimed in his 1870 autobiography Mein Leben that he had been inspired to write the opera following a stormy sea crossing he made from Riga to London in July and August 1839.

Evelyn Lear and Thomas Stewart - a dynamic duo, as they describe themselves, and one of the great musical couples - both celebrate their 80th birthdays in 2006 ! 5-CD box of rarities that cover all aspects of their careers with DG in the 1960s. His Flying Dutchman soliloquy 'Die frist ist um' is riveting-a good place to start if you don't know how intense and foxused an artist he was (for a while he held the record for repeat appearances at Bayreuth, I believe). The high point for Lear as a solo artist is probably the long stretch devoted to Strauss and Wolf lieder, where her warm, musical style is most evident. Orchestrated lieder by Wolf are a rare commidity, and Stewart performs a batch with incredible intensity.
Conductor: Hans Löwlein.

Shortly before the premiere of Der fliegende Holländer in Dresden, Wagner had returned from a deeply unsuccessful two-year stint in Paris. He had gone there to make his fortune, but found his way barred by a strict class-based system. One of the bitterest blows came when Léon Pillet, director of the Paris Opéra, accepted his libretto for Der fliegende Holländer – but then commissioned a score not from Wagner but from French composer Pierre-Louis Dietsch.
