Psychedelic duo Shpongle have an admirable number of releases under their belt, but what they’re most recognized for is onstage insanity. There’s something ineffable about their music, something enigmatic that makes for a fantastic live show, and when considering the measures taken (flashing lights, belly dancers, gargantuan sets, et. by Shpongle, they appear as if they were meant to be performers. And while their virtuosic grasp of the art of visual entertainment says wonders about their dedication to their music, it also can reflect a bit negatively on their albums.

Talk about Shpongle - The God Particle

A superb example of expansive sound engineering, a treat for your ears. If you listen to it through head phones it delivers a halo of sound and through a good hifi system with a wide soundstage you are in for a sonic trip.

When can I find it on vinyl !? Too bad...

People with any sense would save themselves a small fortune by simply buying direct from the Twisted site.

There are always very high expectations from a Shpongle release. The sheer excellence of the vast majority of their material compels us to expect nothing less than perfection from them. Be it their four brilliant albums, where they display their wide variety of influences with dazzling results, always evolving or their two (proper) singles showcasing their more experimental side, they always deliver. This latest single leans towards the experimental aspect of their sound, much like the DMT single of 2000. Here we mostly get a peek at their insane spectrum. As usual the sound is very dense and layered, but this time with very few melodies. There is no flute – or at least not unrecognisable due to heavy treatment – and there’s only an ambient passage at the end of the title track. The rest of the single is definitely laboured over with the assistance of Benji Vaughn, no less, and it does sound like Shpongle, but only in part. The diversity of the albums is nowhere to be heard. I guess this is the reason I view this single as inferior to the rest of their material – the fact that half of the Shpongle sound is absent. The madness is all there, but the beauty to counter balance it is only hinted at. Kind of like what Simon might do under the Hallucinogen moniker, if he decided to resurrect that aspect of this creative genius at this point in his career. The 4/4 of the title track reinforces this view. Now, I must admit that there is always an awkward moment or two before I tune in to their latest release, but I reckon I’m past that with regards to The God Particle. I will definitely take quite a while to absorb all the intricacies of the two tunes on offer, but I think I will always miss the melodies. That’s not to say I didn’t buy the CD of course ;-)
