I Am is a collaborative tribute concept album to Meher Baba featuring Pete Townshend, Michael Da Costa and others, first released in 1972. The album includes the original version of "Baba O'Riley" played by Townshend alone without lyrics, which, at 9:48, is almost twice as long as the augmented version which opens Who's Next. Other albums dedicated to Meher Baba and featuring Townshend include Happy Birthday, With Love, and Avatar (a compilation of the previous three albums, later released as Jai Baba).

Back in the 70's there was a Who bootleg album titled "The Genius of . I never forgot the title, and over the years it has became more and more apparent how accurate that title really is. Pete Townshend, The Who’s guitarist and principal songwriter, was born into a musical family in Chiswick, West London, on May 19, 1945. His father Cliff played the alto saxophone with the RAF dance band The Squadronaires, and his mother Betty Dennis sang professionally. An aunt encouraged him to learn piano but after seeing the movie Rock Around The Clock in 1956 he was drawn to rock’n’roll, an interest his parents actively encouraged

Pete Townshend's first solo album was a homespun, charming forum for low-key, personal songs that weren't deemed suitable for the Who, as well as spiritual paeans (direct and indirect) to his spiritual guru, Meher Baba. Who fans will be immediately attracted by the presence of a couple of songs from the aborted Who concept album Lifehouse (much of which ended up on Who's Next), "Pure & Easy" and "Let's See Action. The Who did eventually release their own versions of both those songs
