Edward Larry Gordon (Laraaji)’s album was first issued in New York as a private-pressing record with only very minimal distribution. Laraaji’s distinctive use of the harp-like open-stringed zither and kalimba (African thumb piano) creates a hypnotic trance like musical landscape. Celestial Vibrations’ was created before the concept of the ‘ambient’ artist existed and after the release of this album Laraaji soon came to the attention of another musical pioneer, Brian Eno. The album is reissued in CD mini box.

Born Edward Larry Gordon in Philadelphia, he studied violin, piano, trombone and voice in his early years in New Jersey. He attended Howard University, a historically black university in Washington, . on a scholarship to study composition and piano. After studying at Howard, he spent time in New York City pursuing a career as a stand-up comedian and actor.

Edward Larry Gordon’s calling wasn’t always music – he spent his late teens plying his wares as a stand-up comic and occasional actor (including a small role in black cinema classic Putney Swope). Having picked up an autoharp in a pawn shop, Gordon began experimenting with unusual opening tunings and audio processing equipment in the 1970s, performing at New Age meets and on the streets of New York.
