Telemann: Music for Oboe. The oboe, with its sharp timbral contrasts among its registers, makes these 12 solo fantasias (with one sonata for oboe and continuo at the end) into almost new works. Each Fantasia contains a series of short sections (from two to seven). The prevailing mood of the flute set is light, with the technically difficult ornamentation serving to put a French sheen on even the predominantly Italianate parts. In Holliger's hands this does not exactly change, but the emphasis falls much more on the implied polyphonic lines in the music. Telemann here sounds almost Bachian.

Georg Philipp Telemann's 12 fantaisies à traversière sans basse, 12 Fantasias for Solo Flute, TWV 40:2–13, were published in Hamburg in 1732–33. An extant copy of the publication, conserved in Brussels, has a spurious title page reading Fantasie per il Violino senza Basso (Fantasias for Solo Violin).

Although the first page says "Violino," and even though every piece, like most Baroque flute music, is performable on the violin, these are the Telemann solo-flute Fantasias.
