Vladimir Samoylovich Horowitz (/ˈhɒrəvɪts/; Russian: Владимир Самойлович Горовиц; Ukrainian: Володимир Самійлович Горовиць; Yiddish: וולאדימיר סאַמוילאָוויטש האָראָוויץ‎; October 1 1903 – November 5, 1989) was an American classical pianist and composer born in the Russian Empire. Starting in 1945, Horowitz engaged the Carnegie Hall Recording Company to record all his solo recitals at that venue. He discontinued this practice after 1950, when RCA began recording his concerts there. After his death in 1989, RCA launched a Private Collection series with individual selections chosen for release by virtue of their historical significance within the context of Horowitz’s career, as well as works that he did not commercially record, such as Chopin’s F minor Fantasy, Liszt’s Légende N., Kabelevsky’s Second Sonata, and Balakirev’s Islamey.

When Horowitz did schedule a concert, it often took the persuasive powers of his wife and friends to keep him from canceling at the last minute. His nagging, and often overpowering, insecurity led him to seek shock therapy in 1973, but though he seemed to achieve some benefit from treatment, he was never free of anxiety when playing in public. The resulting tour became a major political event, coinciding as it did with an era of new understanding between the United States and the Soviet Union, and it resonated powerfully with Soviet audiences. He made his last such recording on November 1, 1989; on November 5 he died of a massive heart attack. As a performer, Horowitz had huge resources of speed and power, and a clean articulation.
