Florent Schmitt himself conducted the second recording of La Tragédie de Salomé in Paris in 1930, leading the Straram Concerts Orchestra. Orchestre des Concerts Straram, Florent Schmitt, conductor. Florent Schmitt (1870 - 1958), La tragédie de Salomé - Symphonic Poem, Op 50 (1909). Performed by Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Marek Janowski cond. 00:00 - Prelude 08:29 - Danse des perles 12:39 - Part 2 14:07 - Les enchantments de la mer 21:57 - Danse des éclairs 25:06 - Danse de l'effroi. This Schmitt fulfilled with the completion in November 1907 of a ballet for a small orchestra of twenty players. Strauss’s opera had received its first Paris performance only six months before, but d’Humières’ scenario does not follow the Oscar Wilde version of the story of Salome, her lust for the prophet Jochanaan (John the Baptist) and her dance before Herod which formed Strauss’s libretto. Indeed, d’Humières conceived his work as a kind of moral answer to Wilde’s supposed amorality.

Florent Schmitt's once popular ballet on the biblical story of Salome was revised and reorchestrated for concert performance in 1911, and the shortened version is what Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Orchestre Métropolitain recorded for ATMA Classique in 2010. A vivid score that incorporates rich harmonies and lush sonorities from late Romanticism and impressionism, La Tragédie de Salomé in its revised form is a tone poem in two parts, rather in the style of Richard Strauss, though quite unlike his famous opera Salomé.
