Album · 2009 · 12 Songs. Zebra finds this Washington State-based singer/songwriter emphasizing the jazz, rocksteady and afrobeat elements in his sound, fusing them neatly with strains of British folk and Robert Wyatt-style progressive rock. Blau’s lyrics have a decidedly eccentric bent, juxtaposing images of nature with skewed snapshots from his own life.

For his third K Records release, he twists '60s psychedelia and explorative jazz into his always sloppy brand of freak-folk. Of course, as it is, it's hardly fair to consider Blau a freak-folk artist anymore. On Zebra, his attempt at making music with an African slant, he maintains his loose slacker ways, while adding a flurry of musical ideas to his minimalist palette

Karl Blau is an American indie rock and folk musician based in Anacortes, Washington, United States, and a member of the Knw-Yr-Own/K Records collective. Blau is a singer-songwriter who releases his music through a subscription service called the "Kelp Lunacy Advanced Plagiarism Society", retitled from "Kelp Monthly" as new releases were not produced and sent out on time

On his third solo album, Karl Blau overtly mirrors African musical influences with hints of blues, soul and rock steeped in l'herbe de Northwest and he calls it Zebra. This recording explores the frontiers of folklore, adding one instrument at a time (drum, guitar, bell, keys, saxophone, flute, piano) in an organic process of response to this confluence of sounds. Blau is adept at imaginative and sweet songs about education, work, love and society; with his expressive and gentle baritone, Blau asks the eternal question: "what's next?" Go Unlimited
