An eponymous debut album reveals far stranger delights, though. James Skelly's vocals may recall Echo & The Bunnymen and even the La's, but it's the spirit of the Doors, Captain Beefheart and Merseybeat that rise up when the six-piece plays (except when they start with the sea shanties, of course). The Coral are a gang of Merseyside cowboys running roughshod over British pop, carelessly breaking musical boundaries and confounding expectations on a song-by-song basis. An eponymous debut album reveals far stranger delights, though.

The Coral's jocular self-titled debut kicked up quite a flurry of excitement when it washed ashore in the summer of 2002. Not since the Beatles, or perhaps even Echo & the Bunnymen, has a young band from England's blustery western coast caused this much commotion. The album begins with a two-minute psych-rock sea shanty, "Spanish Main," which bursts forth with a frothy and joyous refrain that sounds inspired by Treasure Island or Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean, perhaps. Along the way, the boys pick their way through somewhat-discarded flotsam and jetsam genres (mostly from the '60s), including 1964-era Merseybeat, horn-driven ska, fuzzed-out acid rock, and Brit-pop psychedelia.

Singles Collection (The Coral album). Singles Collection is a 3LP & 2CD compilation album by The Coral, and was released on 15 September 2008 in the United Kingdom on the Deltasonic label. It featured a new song "Being Somebody Else", which was released as a single on 8 September 2008. James Skelly – vocals, guitar, producer, arrangements. Lee Southall – guitar, producer, arrangements.

The Coral are an English rock band, formed in 1996. The band first emerged during the early 2000s and found success with their debut album The Coral and follow up Magic and Medicine. Their self-titled debut album was nominated for the 2002 Mercury Music Prize and later voted the fourth best album of the year by NME Magazine. Roots & Echoes is their fourth full-length studio album

The Coral are a rock band that formed in 1996 in Hoylake, Wirral Peninsula, England. The band consists of James Skelly (vocals, guitar), Lee Southall (guitar), Paul Duffy (bass), Nick Power (keyboards) and Ian Skelly (drums). The band's music is a mixture of 1960s-style psychedelia and folk-rock with old-fashioned country and modern alternative rock influences.

The Coral's debut album is full of such inexplicable pleasures. Wildly inventive, entirely removed from current trends, it wears its Scouse colours proudly. Buried within its unique, ever-shifting sound, you will find echoes of the forgotten Liverpudlian bands of the 1990s, the warped R&B of the Stairs, the Strands' harmonic sweetness. At times, it sounds like a potted aural history of an ignored regional subculture. More importantly, however, it sounds like a fantastic debut album by a boundless and frighteningly talented band.
