The Duke Ellington Orchestra - Continuum flac album

When Duke Ellington died in May 1974, his son Mercer took over leadership of the orchestra. Mercer was a trumpeter who made a handful of recordings for Aladdin and Musicraft in the 1940s and three LPs, two for Coral in 1958-59 and one for Doctor Jazz in 1966 (all the LPs borrowed heavily personnel from his father's band). He was a logical choice to succeed his father. This was the first album released by the band after Duke died. It's somewhat of a mixed bag. JUMP FOR JOY is a great opener and swings from the rafters; Ricky Ford takes a nice tenor sax solo.

Although Duke Ellington passed away on May 24, 1974, this posthumous effort can be thought of as his orchestra's final record. Duke's son Mercer took over the big band and at least for a short time still had some surviving veterans in which to form a nucleus. Baritonist Harry Carney is heard on two numbers (taking a solo on "Drop Me Off in Harlem") from the first session before he too passed away.
