Other Road was recorded in 1973, another world entirely. One far more influenced by rock, the youth culture, and electric instruments. Barretto has in fact changed a lot for this album. The staples that make Latin Jazz such-and Barretto the master he is-are all here. But this is not your father's Latin Jazz. Electric instruments, extended pieces, blistering solos and even a little free form jamming are all over Other Road. Barretto's alterations here are extremely effective. Ray Barretto (April 29, 1929 – February 17, 2006) was a Puerto Rican conga drummer and bandleader born in New York. Throughout his career as a percussionist, he played a wide variety of Latin music styles, as well as Latin jazz. His first hit, "El Watusi", was recorded by his Charanga Moderna in 1962, becoming the most successful pachanga song in the United States. In the late 1960s, Barretto became one of the leading exponents of boogaloo and what would later be known as salsa
