Fine Young Cannibals only released two albums, so it's slightly unusual that they even have a greatest-hits collection like Fine Young Cannibals Finest. After all, a dedicated fan will have both records, and casual fans will only want the singles on The Raw & the Cooked, thereby eliminating the audience for the collection. Despite these misgivings, Finest does its job well, featuring 12 of their biggest hits and best-known songs ("She Drives Me Crazy," "Johnny Come Home," "Good Thing," "Suspicious Minds," "Don't Look Back"), plus.

Fine Young Cannibals were a British band formed in Birmingham, England in 1984, by bassist David Steele, guitarist Andy Cox (both formerly of The Beat), and singer Roland Gift (formerly of the Akrylykz). Their self-titled 1985 debut album contained "Johnny Come Home" and a cover of "Suspicious Minds", two songs that were top 40 hits in the UK, Canada, Australia and many European countries.

Nonetheless, Fine Young Cannibals reconvened soon afterwards to focus their attention on writing and recording the remainder of The Raw & the Cooked. Although the band had self-produced the album so far, the bands label MCA Records asked the band to another producer for the second phase of recording. The band initially considered Latin Rascals and Gil Evans but eventually asked MCA to approach Prince to produce tracks to complete the album.

The Fine Young Cannibals almost had it all-taste, chops, and a peerless singer in Roland Gift. In other words, Simply Red with credibility. The one thing they lacked was longevity. This short-lived late-80s band produced some compelling musical hooks that are on display in this collection of greatest hits from a two-album career. Their style draws mostly from 60s to early-70s R&B, updated with crisper 80s bass and percussion. Lead singer Roland Gift sometimes sounds like Al Green, and has the genuine appeal of a sincere imitator.
