Complete your Stan Kenton And His Orchestra collection. I bought this album when it came out in 1972. It is still the most exciting jazz album I have ever heard. Unlike many live albums, "Live in London" captures the true experience of being guided by the orchestra to a higher level of excitement by each succeeding piece. Also, while the concert contains many old Kenton standards, each has a fresh modern and intricate approach that reveals new ideas. The newer pieces demonstrate clearly that Kenton developed musical innovation continually throughout his career. Like many "London" recording the sound quality is excellent

Stan Kenton's young "no-name" big band of the 1970s performs ambitious works by Ken Hanna, Hank Levy, Willie Maiden and Bill Holman on this live double LP. The musicianship is impressive and some of the arrangements are quite dramatic but not all that much originality is shown. A lot of soloists are heard from but few of them would have significant jazz careers after their period with Kenton ended; the main exceptions are veteran saxophonist Willie Maiden, trumpeter Mike Vax, trombone Dick Shearer and drummer John Von Ohlen. This set is well-played but forgettable.
Stanley Newcomb Kenton (December 15, 1911 – August 25, 1979) was an American popular music and jazz artist. As a pianist, composer, arranger and band leader he led an innovative and influential jazz orchestra for almost four decades. Though Kenton had several pop hits from the early 1940s into the 1960s, his music was always forward looking. Kenton was also a pioneer in the field of jazz education, creating the Stan Kenton Jazz Camp in 1959 at Indiana University.
This 1970 album heralded the emergence of the Kenton band from a relatively unproductive period on the recording scene, and along with the 1972 "Stan Kenton Today" album attracted a whole new generation of fans. Kenton's combination of new material and fresh performances of older charts was embraced by big band enthusiasts and jazz educators in the 1970s
