What's New is an album of traditional pop standards released by American oducer Linda Ronstadt in 1983. It represents the first in a trilogy of 1980s albums Ronstadt recorded with bandleader/arranger Nelson Riddle. John Kosh designed the album covers for all three albums. The album spawned a major change in popular culture because Ronstadt was then considered the leading female vocalist in rock.

Laid-Back/Mellow Gentle Soothing Warm Poignant Soft/Quiet Yearning Nostalgic Reflective Romantic Earnest Sentimental Sweet Bittersweet. Round Midnight with Nelson Riddle and His Orchestra. Round Midnight is a two-disc box set that compiles all three of the traditional pop albums Linda Ronstadt recorded with Nelson Riddle (What's New, Lush Life, and For Sentimental Reasons). Only dedicated fans will need to own all three of the albums, and, for those listeners, this is a classy way to purchase them.

Arrangements for Linda Ronstadt's What's New (1983) and Lush Life (1984) won Riddle his second and third Grammy Awards. On January 19, 1985, he conducted at the nationally televised 50th Presidential Inaugural Gala, the day before the second inauguration of Ronald Reagan. The program was hosted by Frank Sinatra, who sang "Fly Me to the Moon" and "One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)" (backed by a solo dance routine by Mikhail Baryshnikov). In 2000, Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops released a Nelson Riddle tribute album titled Route 66: That Nelson Riddle Sound on Telarc Records

So when What’s New was released it really opened the eyes to a generation that wasn’t all that familiar with the works of George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin (except during the Holidays) but this album changed that. Yes, they were known to a point, but not like they should have been. This really did change all that. Another unique aspect about this album was that it was the first album created by the latest mastering technology at the time called: Pure Analog 32-bit 192 Capture! Yes. It is the first highest resolution album with pure analog sound. I really only have one thing negative to say about this project and that was one, maybe two of these albums would have been enough. Unfortunately, Asylum Records decided after this album’s success that they wanted two more. The follow up Lush Life wasn’t as good and didn’t sell as well. The trend continued after that with For Sentimental Reasons.

The fact that Nelson Riddle and Linda Ronstadt found each other at just the moment they did in the 1980s rivals the greatest love stories ever told. The title song might be the best single performance of Ronstadt;s amazing career-just the last six notes she sings are worth the price of the album. If you don't love this album then you don't have a drop of romance in your soul. What's New is real art - by two real artists.

Other albums by Linda Ronstadt & the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. The 80's Studio Album Collection. Instead of trying to compete with a newer, fashion-conscious pop marketplace, Linda Ronstadt removed herself from the rat race, recording an album of traditional pop standards with Nelson Riddle. Ronstadt's voice isn't always showcased to a fine effect on these songs, but the record is an interesting change of pace.
