The Detroit-Memphis Experiment" was recorded in June 1969 in Stax Studios in Memphis and released the same year. It was the 7th album for Mitch Ryder, and a turning point in his fading career. Strange enough, but the early years of his career are better known and acknowledged. He was born in Detroit February 26th 1945 as William Levise Jr (Sr was an established performer on Detroit radio in the mid 40s), and used to sing with his father in gospel churches. By 1964 The Rivieras became major attraction and headliners in the local circuit. They were spotted and signed by Bob Crewe who travelled from New York watch them opening for Dave Clark Five; in 1965 they went to New York where the name Mitch Ryder was picked from the phone book and the band was re-christened Detroit Wheels.

The Detroit Wheels were an American rock band, formed in Detroit in 1964. They served as Mitch Ryder's backup band from 1964 to 1967. The band had a number of top twenty hits in the mid-1960s before lead singer Ryder was enticed away by Bob Crewe with offers of a solo career, after which the group quickly dissolved.

Ryder's career then took several detours, when Bob Crew encouraged him to pursue a solo career. Unhappy with the results, Mitch went to Memphis to record The Detroit-Memphis Experiment album with Stax luminaries Booker T. & The MGs and The Memphis Horns for Dot. He then returned home to a reunion with The Wheels drummer John Badanjek in the short-lived supergroup Detroit, which lasted just long enough to record one monster of a heavy-duty rock 'n' roll album in 1971
