David is an album by former Temptations singer, David Ruffin, who died of a cocaine overdose in 1991. Although recorded during the late 1960s through the early 1970s, the album was not released until 2004, 13 years after Ruffin's death.

It's well known that Motown recorded more material than it could release, but its reasons for shelving material remain a mystery to this day. Ever since the CD reissue boom of the late '80s, this unreleased material has begun to trickle out of the vaults, and when it does surface in such forms as the dynamite double-disc set A Cellarful of Motown!, the music is so good it's hard to believe that it never was released at the time.
David Ruffin (album). David Ruffin is the self-titled album from singer David Ruffin. This album in many ways was a collaborative effort with Bobby Miller, who produced the album. Miller also had a hand in composing eight of its tracks.
Influenced David Lee Roth, Axl Rose, Scott Weiland. Steven Tyler has a theory about how singing first began. It had to be with the first primate uttering a moan during sex," he says. I truly believe that's where the passion of voice comes from. It was a little flirty, but he was never actually hitting on me, he was just having fun. It was all the power and none of the guilt! I miss him so much. In contrast to his heavenly-voiced partner, Eddie Kendricks, Ruffin sang as if every word was a plea - pain and desperation filled his lead vocals on "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," "(I Know) I'm Losing You" and "I Wish It Would Rain. His voice had a certain glorious anguish that spoke to people on many emotional levels," says Daryl Hall, who briefly recorded and performed with Ruffin in the Eighties.
Ruffin’s second album for Warner Brothers, 1980’s Gentleman Ruffin might have been even better. By this point, Ruffin was hitting his late 30s, had matured as a vocalist, and didn’t (or couldn’t) oversing like he did in his early solo days. Like many veteran R&B acts of the time, if there were no hits or potential for any, big labels would release the act to give him or her the chance to explore other opportunities. In the intervening years more has been learned about Ruffin’s struggles, his fights with Motown as well as the pain behind his cathartic vocals. His work began to be re-issued and in 2004, Hip-O Select/Motown finally released the long-shelved David and it proved to be one of the strongest albums. A few years later the same labels issued The Great David Ruffin-The Solo Albums Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. and it covered all of his work from 1969 to 1977.
