1977 is the first official album by Ash, released in May 1996 in the United Kingdom and the following month in the US. The album proved popular in the UK and Ireland, and to a lesser degree elsewhere, where Britpop was a smaller cult phenomenon. It is ranked at 417 on the NME poll of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
With Meltdown, Ash continue their streak as one of Briitain's most versatile and hard-rocking outfits. They may never reach soaring heights here in the US. But they remain a hidden rock treasure for anyone willing to look hard enough. Once I saw them open for the emo punk band, Saves The Day. The white teenage audience seemed uninterested, but they couldn't deny the brilliance of "Burn Baby Burn. Ash recorded this album in California and was influenced by their time in the USA. "Meltdown" and "Evil Eye" are heavy rock songs. Their song "Clones" is being used on the Star Wars video game. Most of this album seems obsessed with explosions, energy and power.

Ash are unique in that the older they get, the faster and harder their material becomes. But don't let that fire-bathed, tattoo-inspiring cover art fool you: Ash are still a power-pop band. Meltdown does rock harder, and with more snarl, than any of their previous albums, but they still can't help but reveal their melodic sweet tooth. Meltdown is closest to the slick production of their most recent LP, Free All Angels, though the band's Undertones-esque charm has been shelved to make room for sharpened, arena-ready choruses.
