Rufus was an American funk band from Chicago, Illinois, best known for launching the career of lead singer Chaka Khan. They had several hits throughout their career, including "Tell Me Something Good", "Sweet Thing", "Do You Love What You Feel" and "Ain't Nobody". Rufus and Chaka Khan were one of the most popular and influential funk bands of the 1970s, with four consecutive number one R&B albums, ten Top 40 Pop Hits and five number one R&B singles, among other accolades.

Ask Rufus was Rufus and Chaka Khan’s fifth album, an R&B Number One titled after the Popular Mechanics column that had previously given the band its name. The album witnessed the funk crew branching out, touching its slow jams with light jazz ( Everlasting Love ), offering a short, classically influenced interlude ( Slow Screw Against the Wall/A Flat Fry ), and ending on a striking orchestral ballad ( Egyptian Song ).

This 1977 effort is the follow-up to 1975's Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan. Ask Rufus has the group doing more sophisticated and constantly challenging work with an accent on evocative ballads. The effort's lone dance track "At Midnight (My Love Will Lift You Up) has the band going for more subtlety. The jazzy "Close the Door" has a confident and gentle vocal from Khan and a beautiful string arrangement from Clare Fischer who offered them throughout this effort.

Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan. I remember this album (yes I said album) when I was in high school. It still holds the same impact it did back then. Chaka Khan's strong vocals with Rufus background sound is, at the same time, melodic and forceful without being hard on the ears. And the dance cuts still make you get up and shake your booty.
