Blue Lights in the Basement is the sixth studio album by American singer Roberta Flack released by Atlantic on December 13, 1977. The album was a commercial success, peaking at number eight on the US Billboard 200, becoming her third consecutive top-ten album on the chart and reaching number five on the R&B albums chart. On February 27, 1978, the album received a Gold certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipments over 500,000 copies.

This album finds Flack responding to the changing times with a batch of smooth tracks and a polished and accomplished production. Of course by this time, she seemed to be divorced from the intelligent and recondite work that typified the early part of her career. Some of the tracks here do come close to that style; "25th of Last December" and "Love Is the Healing" throw in some nice changes to complement Flack's sweet and patient vocals. What caused this album to be such a big seller was the Flack and Donny Hathaway duet, "The Closer I Get to Yo. The track.

Released in 1977, Blue Lights in the Basement is Roberta Flack's follow-up to 1975's Feel Like Makin' Love. Of course during the space between the two efforts, R&B and pop had certainly changed immensely. This album finds Flack responding to the changing times with a batch of smooth tracks and a polished and accomplished production. The track easily attains the grace and gorgeous sound that a lot of the like-minded songs here just miss. The dramatic "Where I'll Find You" appropriately closes the album and has a great echo effect on her voice during the chorus.

Produced by Atlantic Records, the song was released on Flack’s 1977 album Blue Lights in the Basement, and as a single in 1978. It became a major crossover hit, becoming Flack’s biggest commercial hit after her success with her 1973 solo single, Killing Me Softly with His Song. James Mtume and Reggie Lucas wrote the song between tours and, during the sessions for the album, brought it to Flack’s producer Joe Ferla, who played it for Flack. Ferla, Rubina Flake and Gene McDaniels produced the song, and Ahmet Ertegun served as its executive producer. Flack and Donny Hathaway, good friends while attending Howard University, recorded a self-titled album of duets in 1972. Five years later, the duo collaborated again on The Closer I Get to You.
