Maverick, 1997) Syncopated riffs, big pants and goofy band names are nu-metal trademarks, and Deftones initially fit the bill, but when singer Chino Moreno opened his mouth on this remarkable second album, he uncorked a haunting, sexually ambiguous edge that owes more to Eighties dream-pop groups like the Cure and Cocteau Twins - both of whom the Sacramento-bred band later covered. Epic, 1997) Before frontman Brandon Boyd gave up on shirts entirely and his Cali band found soft-rock chart success, Incubus were be-dreaded fun-in-the-sun spazzes, mashing together metal, funk, hip-hop, trip-hop, jazz and more on their sophomore album . Cuts like "Vitamin," "Idiot Box" and "A Certain Shade of Green" have. been live staples ever since, and for good reason: They might be heavier than the group's more recent fare, but they're no less hooky and full of refreshingly good vibes.
Here’s the thing, though: not ALL nu-metal sucked. It might be unfair to call Alston nu-metal - alt metal might be more like it - but there were definitely some stylistic similarities and they were shooting for the same target audience of disenfranchised Primer 55 fans. Hear Kobie Jackson’s voice and you’ll be hooked instantly, and yes, the whole album is good. What a weird fucking album, and what a weird fucking band! Unlike a lot of the other bands on this list who wrote their best albums when they dropped the nu-metal pretense and just wrote honest pop metal songs, Boy Hits Car kept it dirty and raw, and maybe that’s why this album works so well - this band was the real thing. Psuedo-major label Wind-Up seemingly just left them to their own devices, and the results were explosive.
This paved the way for Godhead’s Eleanor Rigby. A huge goth-tinged floor-filler that turned little Amy Lee into the biggest female rock star of the 21st century (at least until Hayley Williams showed up). What happened to the rapping bloke? No idea. Pretty much the perfect encapsulation of the nu-metal ideology. Yeah, a white redneck guy can rap over the top of one of the most iconic riffs of the biggest metal band of all time.
this album, follow the leader of KORN, slipknot of SLIPKNOT, system of a down of system of a down, rage against the machine of rage against the machine, chocolate starfish and hot dog flavoured water of limp bizkit were ranked in "1001 albums you must have listened before you die". Favourites are definitely "In The End", "Paper cut" and "A Place.
Nu metal groups and artists are shown below along with any additional genres in which their music belongs.
Nu-metal makes my stomach turn. Nu metal was such a huge success from the start that it was inevitable that any sense of artistic integrity would quickly be eaten away. Great Metal has always traditionally risen from the underground. In turn a tenth of those may make the effort and pick up a Napalm Death album and so on right down to an unsigned grind band getting a handful of extra fans. For some of us it all started with Metallica or Iron Maiden, for some Lamb of God or Killswitch Engage - but where does a kid listening to Cold or Papa Roach go?
Hard rock and heavy metal in the 21st century is the most diverse of any decade. While legacy acts from the '70s and '80s and '90s all continued to release new material, the turn of the millennium has given rise to a whole new crop of artists. Classic artists like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Rush continued to make big splashes in the 2000s and grunge and extreme metal acts from the previous decade continued their dominance. Throw in nu-metal, metalcore and more and you're firmly entrenched in the 21st century
