Requiem For Hell is undeniably heavier and scarier than most of MONO's output to this point – hear the dizzying 18- minute title track for example – but it also carries some of their most sublime moments. In Mono's music, rock is a way of examining and expressing emotional, psychological, and spiritual states. Requiem for Hell is the quartet's ninth album. It's a reunion with Steve Albini, their behind-the-boards collaborator from 2004's Walking Cloud and Deep Red Sky through 2009's Hymn to the Immortal Wind. This is a back to basics affair, an attempt to sum up everywhere Mono has been, but it's also their noisiest record ever. Opener "Death in Rebirth" is a companion piece to "Death and Reverse," their half of 2015's Transcendental split.

Mono announced the forthcoming release of Requiem For Hell on 19 July 2016, their ninth studio album. It reintroduces strings to their sound. It was also their first full album under the newly formed label Pelagic Records. Prior to the full release of Requiem For Hell they did a split album with The Ocean (Transcendental) to commemorate this event. Later it was known that it was actually a sneak peek of the first two songs of their upcoming album.

Requiem for Hell is Mono’s ninth album and finally sees them beginning to flaunt their majestic mastery once more. Requiem for Hell is based on Dante’s epic poem Divine Comedy that tells the tale of the poet travelling through ‘Hell’, then ‘Purgatory’ and finally ‘Heaven’. As a standalone album, Requiem for Hell is an engaging, mesmeric album that develops various emotions through its undemanding 45 minutes. However, compared to what we know Mono is capable of, the album is unadventurous, unsurprising and only refracts past ideas. Despite the great potential Requiem for Hell has, it can’t seem to claw its way to the emotional summit that Mono left their mark on in their glory days.
