But Alexandre Tharaud carefully selects the works from Couperin's highly varied harpsichord works that are best suited to the piano. This is an enormously entertaining album which doesn't bank on showy virtuosity, instead allowing the intimate character of Couperin's music to take center stage. The French harpsichord master had a sense of humor, as the titles of the individual works demonstrate. Opulent and ornate French harpsichord music, played on a modern piano: it could have been a disaster. But Alexandre Tharaud carefully selects the works from Couperin's highly varied harpsichord works that are best suited to the piano.

Couperin's Pièces de Clavecin are remarkably diverse and durable enough to retain their charms, and even reveal new ones in incarnations other than their original format. He had previously done the same for a recital of Rameau's Nouvelles de Suites de Pièces de Clavecin. After one adjusts to the initial shock of hearing this repertoire played on a modern instrument, the pieces Tharaud selected sound wonderful on the piano.
