Strange Little Girls is a concept album released by singer-songwriter Tori Amos in 2001. The album's 12 tracks are covers of songs written and originally performed by men, reinterpreted by Amos from a female's point of view. Amos created female personae for each track (one song featured twins) and was photographed as each, with makeup done by Kevyn Aucoin.
The album has a variety of alternative covers depicting Tori as the special character for a selected song: 1st Cover: "Happiness is a Warm Gun" song, red hair Tori: the most common cover version. 2nd Cover: "Strange Little Girl" song, brunette Tori, also known as "Satin Worship" cover. 3rd Cover (North America, Brazil and Japan only): "Time" song, blonde Tori: the rarest version. 4th Cover: "Raining Blood": Tori with cigarette. The unobligaTori cover-up: Tori Amos – Strange Little Girls. There generally tends to be the reek of desperation around most cover albums – you get the scratchy feeling that the artist has hit a dead slump in their creative flow, is constrained (by whatever peripheral reason) to release something, and takes therefore the quickest and simplest route to get rid of the nuisance of actually living up to the expectations of their job.
So, six albums into her career, and several years since she captured headlines, she released Strange Little Girls, a collection of covers intended to strike a dagger into the heart of how males view females in pop songs.
Strange Little Girl" is the third song on Tori Amos' 2001 covers album Strange Little Girls. The song was released as the album's first and only single in Germany in October 2001. Strange Little Girl" was originally written and recorded by the Stranglers, first appearing on their 1982 greatest hits album The Collection 1977-1982. Amos chose to cover "Strange Little Girl".
Tori's sixth solo album, Strange Little Girls, was released on September 17, 2001 (UK) and September 18, 2001 (US). All the songs were written by men; Tori found a woman's voice in each song, without changing the words. She started the project in the Summer of 2000, while pregnant with her daughter, Natashya. Recording began on February 1, 2001, in Cornwall, England, and wrapped up mid-July. Tori Amos photographed for Vanity Fair by Sam Jones on July 7, 2000.
