Even though the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic has never sounded better and Janowski seems to have difficulties controlling tempi throughout. The motoric inner pulse of Brahms, evident in both his harmony and notated rhythm, often feels unsteady in Janowski's control: he seems to encourage momentum in places that need stasis, and places that require restraint seem to have none. These rhythmic issues not only create tension for the listener, but the orchestra as well; there are noticeable problems with ensemble throughout, especially during Brahms' more stirring, syncopated passages.
