There are several attractions on this album of Schumann works by German-American cellist Jan Vogler, accompanied by the celebrated Hélène Grimaud (who properly reins in some of her more extreme tendencies here). The final Andante and variations, Op. 46, for the odd but quintessentially domestic combination of two pianos, two cellos, and horn, is not heard very often, and it's one of Schumann's few lighthearted works. In the Fantasiestücke for cello and piano, Op. 73, Vogler cultivates an emotionally intense, intimate mood and achieves quite a dramatic, involving performance.

Jan Vogler (born February 18, 1964) is a German-born classical cellist who lives in New York City. Born in East Berlin, he studied first with his father Peter Vogler and subsequently with Josef Schwab in Berlin, Heinrich Schiff in Basel and Siegfried Palm. At the age of 20 he won the principal cello position of the Staatskapelle Dresden, becoming the youngest player in the history of this orchestra to hold that position

Jan Vogler distinguished career has seen him perform with renowned conductors and internationally acclaimed orchestras around the world. His strong classical foundation has allowed him to push the boundaries of his sound, creating an ongoing dialogue with contemporary composers and performers. Jan Vogler has been Artistic Director of the Moritzburg Festival near Dresden since 2001, and Intendant of the Dresden Music Festival since October 2008. In 2006, he received the European Award for Culture and in 2011 the Erich-Kästner Award for tolerance, humanity and international understanding. For his recording of Bach’s six Suites for cello solo he was awarded the ECHO Klassik 2014 award in the category Instrumentalist of the Year (cello).

In autumn 2010, Jan Vogler and Hélène Grimaud went on tour to perform a chamber music programme made up of works by Schumann, Brahms and Shostakovich; they had time to maturate this repertoire before bringing it at the Cité de la musique.
