Released in November 1971, (three years after the group originally split) the album came to be because the former members of the group were still under contract with Dunhill Records

Yes, it was a last gasp - it came years after the group's official "breakup" and had the scent of a money grab at first. Papa John's lyrics weren't as incisive as they once had been; you could see the toll the H had been taking on him, both musically (and personally, in the cover photos). Yes, it had that slick '70s soft-rock sheen.

The Mamas & the Papas broke up in 1968, but they still owed an album on their contract with Dunhill Records (later absorbed by MCA). So, three years later, they reunited to make People Like Us and complete their obligation. But the release did not rekindle interest in the Mamas & the Papas, and this was their last new album.
