The Painted Word is the fourth studio album by English post-punk band Television Personalities. It was released in 1984 by record label Illuminated. The Painted Word has been generally well received by critics. Jack Barron of Sounds wrote "Some people think this is the best group in Britain. But that's a pointless debate to engage in when you can listen to such a well-crafted record. Ira Robbins of Trouser Press called the album "surprisingly serious and altogether excellent.

The Painted Word is a 1975 book of art criticism by Tom Wolfe. By the 1970s Wolfe was, according to Douglas Davis of Newsweek magazine "more of a celebrity than the celebrities he describes. The success of Wolfe's previous books, in particular The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test in 1968 and Radical Chic & Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers in 1970, had given Wolfe carte blanche from his publisher to pursue any topic he desired.

Allan McCusker Thompson´s The Painted Word released their first single the fantastic International Day in 1986 and then another two excellent singles Worldwide and That’s The Reason I´m Alive in 1989, non charted. That year they also released their debut album Lovelife which is a great Scottish indie/pop album. It wasn´t until 1995 that they released their last album the gorgeous Universal but well worth the wait as it is an album of mature textured songs in a similar vein to The Blue Nile
