The recording, made at the Evangelische Kirche, Gönningen, was produced by Hilliard Ensemble singer John Potter, who has monitored the Trio Mediaeval's development almost from the group's inception. The Trio was formed in Oslo in 1997 and its musical direction was confirmed by intensive study with The Hilliard Ensemble at the Hilliard Summer Festival in Cambridge. Through The Hilliard Ensemble, the Trio Mediaeval have come into contact with contemporary composers including Joan Metcalf, Paul Robinson, Markus Ludwig and Ivan Moody, whose "Words of the Angel" they first performed in 1998. Moody's is the sole contemporary piece on the recording, a jewel now re-set in the neighbourhood of the Messe de Tournai.

The Trio Mediaeval is a remarkable group of women from Scandanavia whose repertoire consists of contemporary works and medieval compositions, as well as Baroque church music. This recording comprises a Messe de Tournai of polyphonic mass movements from a 14th century text and is interspersed with motets and songs from roughly the same period, including a number of works from English manuscripts

Trio Mediaeval – three Scandinavian women whose singing produces "a sound of extraordinary and consoling beauty, says the Boston Globe – offer a collection of polyphony from the medieval to the modern titled after the North Wind with their sixth ECM New Series release, Aquilonis. One can sense a reference in the title to the Nordic roots of the singers, as well as the bracing purity of their voices; moreover, the album’s repertoire travels from Iceland to Italy, from north to south like the Aquilonis wind.
