Italia mia, madrigal. Huelgas Ensemble, Paul van Nevel. 2. Agnus Dei "Italia Mia". La mia doglia s'avanza (from Il Primo Libro de' Madrigali à 4 voci, Napoli, 1613).

Italia mia, madrigal.

The Huelgas Ensemble is a Belgian early music group formed by the Flemish conductor Paul Van Nevel in 1971. The group's performance and extensive discography focuses on renaissance polyphony. The name of the ensemble refers to a manuscript of polyphonic music, the Codex Las Huelgas.

This is a collection of Italian vocal music of the 16th century, and the performances by the Hueglas Ensemble under the direction of Paul van Nevel are excellent. Italian music from this period tends to be richer, more decorative, and more eclectic than that from France or Flanders, and the singers make the most of the music's alluring colors and sometimes eccentric designs.
