David Michael Portner (born April 24, 1979), also known by his moniker Avey Tare, is a musician and songwriter who co-founded the American experimental pop band Animal Collective. He has released three solo albums, as well as three collaborative albums with Panda Bear (Noah Lennox) which were later retroactively classified under Animal Collective's discography.

Avey Tare’s last solo album, 2017’s Eucalyptus, was keyed to nature yet felt claustrophobic, a world away from the sun-baked hillsides that inspired it: If it was a hike, it was a mountain path at dusk, when the trail markers begin disappearing into darkness. Last year, Animal Collective’s Tangerine Reef, an audiovisual album about coral ecosystems, was even more amorphous. But with Cows on Hourglass Pond, Portner comes back up for air and stakes out a middle position. Yours points up one of Cows on Hourglass Pond’s best qualities: its sense of humor. Just take the closing HORS, an equine-themed song whose title is ostensibly inspired by the two-person basketball game.

Cows on Hourglass Pond is the third solo studio album by American musician Avey Tare. It was released on March 22, 2019, through Domino Recording Company. The album follows 2017's Eucalyptus and will be supported by a tour. Its announcement was accompanied by the release of the video for "Saturdays (Again)", directed by Avey Tare's sister, Abby Portner.

Which brings us to Avey Tare (Dave Portner), and where he falls into the fold. I suppose my outlook on his discography is a bit different than most, as I thoroughly enjoyed his last album, Eucalyptus. There was a lot to love about that album in my eyes, but something just did not sit with the listening public. Perhaps there was still lingering doubt. After all, that album was coming only a year off the polarizing Painting With, an album considered one of the Collective’s weakest releases to date. Avey Tare, aka Animal Collective’s Dave Portner, has announced his latest solo album, Cows on Hourglass Pond. Set for a March 22nd release via Domino, the record follows Avey Tare’s 2017 LP, Eucalyptus, as well as AnCo’s Tangerine Reef from last year. The new effort was recorded last winter at Laughing Gas studio in Asheville, North Caroline. Mixed by Portner himself alongside Adam McDaniel, all 10 tracks on the LP were made using a Tascam 48 half-inch reel-to-reel tape machine.

Hearing Avey Tare perform this album live really helped me appreciate it more. There are many layers to these songs, creating what I think is the best AnCo solo album yet. I still think some of the album is a bit too slow and bores me, but it doesn't take away from the whole washed out psychedelia found throughout the project. Cows on Hourglass Pond"'s production is beautiful, the lyrical themes are smart and the atmosphere is miles better than the nausea of Panda Bear's "Buoys".
