Controversy is the fourth studio album by American recording artist Prince, released on October 14, 1981 by Warner Bros. It was produced by Prince, written (with the exception of one track) by him, and he also performed most of the instruments on its recording. Controversy opens with the title track, which raises questions that were being asked about Prince at the time, including his race and sexuality. The song "flirts with blasphemy" by including a chant of The Lord's Prayer.
Controversy emerged in 1981 at a pivotal time not just for Prince, but for America. It's often regarded as a bridge between Dirty Mind and 1999, but it's fascinating record in its own right. On October 9, 1981, just five days before the release of his fourth studio album, Controversy, Prince walked onto the stage of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, faced a crowd of roughly 90,000 predominantly white people (what was then his biggest audience ever) and experienced the kind of vitriolic backlash that would become the stuff of rock legend.

Listen free to Prince – Controversy (Controversy, Sexuality and more). It is also more ambitious than its predecessor, attempting to tackle social protest ("Controversy," "Ronnie, Talk to Russia," "Annie Christian") along with sex songs ("Jack U Off," "Sexuality"), and it tries hard to bring funk to a rock audience and vice versa.
Even with all of Prince's ambitions, the music on Controversy doesn't represent a significant breakthrough from Dirty Mind, and it is often considerably less catchy and memorable. Nevertheless, Prince's talents as musician make the record enjoyable, even if it isn't as compelling as most of his catalog.
Prince – Controversy. Format: Vinyl, LP, Album. Before I decided to clean up my act, I wore this album out! Like "Dirty Mind", I had to sneak it into the house (I was only 10). The title track saved me for years from getting caught with it, it was the cleanest song on the album, it also was the funkiest. You P fans know about the rest, it was pure sexuality at work, something P would revisit over, and over again! A prince classic! Reply Notify me 1 Helpful.
Controversy, controversy, controversy Controversy, controversy, controversy. Our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses As we forgive those who trespass against us Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil For thine is the kingdom and the power. and the glory forever and ever. Here’s his enigmatic entry for Controversy : write about the first time U heard reflective notes.
Prince’s first album For You was released by Warner in 1978 and got stuck at on Billboard’s Pop Chart. Later Prince said that For You didn’t reflect him as a person. It was too mechanical and recorded after too many sessions on very little sleep. He said of the album, I didn’t really feel like recording for eighty per cent of the record. This religious, jazzy album (Prince had recently converted to become a Jehovah’s Witness) was a big gig for Bayoc. The name Cbabi Bayoc is an acronym for Creative Black Artist Battling Ignorance and Blessed African Youth of Creativity. Just a few years before, you could find Bayoc at Six Flags Over St. Louis working as a caricature artist.
