According to lead singer Charlotte Wessels, the album's title was inspired by Octavia E. Butler's science fiction trilogy Lilith's Brood. The Human Contradiction' refers to humans in general being highly intelligent and hierarchically structured at the same time

The Human Contradiction" is a great symphonic metal piece. Although certain songs are a bit more memorable than others, the album as a whole is very enjoyable and well made. The tracks are really diverse, the melodies stick to the listener, and most of all, the singing is quite breathtaking. Even those who aren't attached to symphonic metal (or even metal in general) are recommended to this empowering release.

Returning to his home in Zwolle in the north east of Holland, he initially created demo album 'Amenity' with a group of old friends, before meeting 19-year-old singer Charlotte Wessels who was fronting To Elysium and happened to be suffering with the same disease. As the pair recovered together, they bonded over a love of grand orchestral rock music like Queen, Pink Floyd and Iron Maiden, and they were both healthy by the time they completed debut album 'Lucidity' in 2006 and landed a deal with Roadrunner Records.

Delain’s fourth album, The Human Contradiction, is an exercise in playing to one’s strengths. Delain never really rose to the level of stardom within the symphonic, gothic world that many of their countrymen did, but they’ve had a consistent run at it over their twelve year career. Unlike others, they seemed to have trouble finding their niche within the scene. Within Temptation seems to have cornered the market on blending pop-driven songs with symphonic gothic flourishes and Epica seems to be a burgeoning force behind the symphonic power metal combination, but Delain never really made huge.
