Damaged is the debut studio album by the American hardcore punk band Black Flag. SST Records released it on December 5, 1981. Over the years since the album's original release it has been recognized as a classic and one of the most influential punk rock records ever made, appearing on a number of "best of" lists by fans and critics alike. In 2003, the album was ranked number 340 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time

It is said that the period from 1980 to 1986 is considered to peak of hardcore punk. Among some highly successful hardcore punk bands of the decade include the politically-enraged Dead Kennedys, as well as Bad Brains, and The Germs. The album to me revolves around the lyrics. While most of the songs tell about paranoia, alcoholism, drug abuse, isolation, and neurosis, they are presented by Rollins in a fashion that makes the lyrics themselves misleading. Excellent guitar-work by lead guitarist Greg Guinn fit it perfectly with whatever the deal is in separate tracks, and makes it stand for what it is.

Damaged does have its semi-traditional moments, and they all suffer from the band trying too hard. Consider the fairly crappy pogoing punk number TV Party, something of a cult classic for its singalong chorus. When Damaged emerged, though, it was an anomaly. Though he loved the album, he noted, The group’s grinding guitar attac. till lacks the brightness of X’s often rockabilly-accented arrangements.

Perhaps the best album to emerge from the quagmire that was early-'80s California hardcore punk, the visceral, intensely physical presence of Damaged has yet to be equaled, although many bands have tried. Although Black Flag had been recording for three years prior to this release, the fact that Henry Rollins was now their lead singer made all the difference.
