The B-52s (styled as The B-52's prior to 2008) is an American new wave band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1976. The original line-up consisted of Fred Schneider (vocals), Kate Pierson (vocals, keyboards), Cindy Wilson (vocals, percussion), Ricky Wilson (guitar), and Keith Strickland (drums, guitar, keyboards). Ricky Wilson died from AIDS-related illness in 1985, and Strickland switched from drums to lead guitar. The band also added touring members for albums and live performances.

The B-52's is the debut album by the Athens, Georgia-based new wave band the B-52's. The kitschy lyrics and mood, and the hook-laden harmonies helped establish a fanbase for the band, who went on to release several chart-topping singles.

The B-52’s spent the last part of the ‘70s and the first half of the ‘80s as one of the coolest, goofiest groups around, forging a solid reputation as a fun-time party band through such singles as Rock Lobster, Private Idaho, and so on down the line, but with the death of founding member Ricky Wilson in 1985

The B-52’s, (now stylized as The B-52s) are an internationally successful New Wave band also known for their campy fashion. Their original line-up included Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Keith Strickland, Cindy Wilson and Ricky Wilson. Originally, all members of the band played multiple instruments. Their self-titled first album The B-52’s was released to critical acclaim in 1979, spawning the Canadian chart-topping hit Rock Lobster, which was also successful in Australia, New Zealand, the US and the UK. It was followed by Wild Planet in 1980 which spawned another minor US hit with Private Idaho. Whammy! followed in 1983, giving the band a third minor US hit with Legal Tender. Its first single Channel Z topped the then-new Billboard Modern Rock chart, and its next three singles Love Shack, Roam and Deadbeat Club were crossover pop hits, all reaching the top 30 on Billboard’s Hot 100.
