Dutch maulers IZAH are dropping their massive debut record ‘Sistere’ onto the world, and it’s one hell of a journey to take. It’s emotional, dark, sometimes uplifting, and always effectiv. ZAH may have taken their time finally putting their first big stake in the ground, but they knew what they were doing and clearly were making sure everything was ready for their formal introduction into the world. Sistere’ is a passionate, raucous experience, and the record that will get inside of you and completely change your demeanor  . In the middle of the day IZAH delivered one of the best performances of Roadburn 2015. For those who were not there, I can only tell them to get their hands on IZAH’s debut album ‘Sistere’ as soon as possible, for the mix of atmospheric sludge, post-hardcore, post-rock and doom is breathtakingly good and of international stature. Sistere doesn't sound like a debut.

Hailing from Tilburg, The Netherlands, IZAH takes elements of sludge, post-rock, hardcore and black metal and blends these into a dark and gloomy mix of heavy riffs, downhearted melodics and densely layered sound dynamics.

Sistere is the first album of 2015 that I don’t want to forget about by June. Indefinite Instinct begins as a slow burn, but ignites into a rolling brush fire as the guitarists fire out massive, sludgy Rosetta riffs until they run out of oxygen. Mournful arpeggios, smoky synths and soaring, wailing guitar lines gradually build up again under the sampled monologue of an anguished Scotsman, and the song comes to an intense peak as synth player, vocalist Sierk Entius screams and roars with more angst than a man whose thousands of tulips suddenly became worthless. Izah excels at transitioning between styles and moods, not only because of the tightly executed riff and tempo changes, but because the songs are written in such a way that each new section seems to follow logically from the last one. Duality goes from atmospherics and unabomber news clips to sludge doom almost effortlessly, speeding up the tempo and slowly introducing distortion as the sound clips become more layered, panicked and frenetic.

Sistere itself clocks in at a whopping 72 minutes. By debut standards this is ridiculous and frankly a little bit pretentious, but Izah gets away with it. There are only 4 tracks on this album, which means they all are longer than 10 minutes. The title track is the longest track on this debut, which lasts almost as long as the other 3 tracks combined. It’s great to see that the track ‘Sistere’ doesn’t let down a single second, being 32 minutes long. It succeeds in combining all the parts that made the other tracks so stunning and throws in some electronic samples for good measure.
