Leroy Smart is somewhat of a transitional figure in Jamaican reggae. He began his career solidly in the roots tradition, but his impassioned (some would say overwrought) and gravel-filled vocals coupled with his bad boy, pre-gangsta public image helped him morph easily into the dancehall era, although his focus continued to be on a roots-lineage mix of conscious themes and straight-ahead love songs.
