Sonny Clark - Sonny's Crib flac album

Sonny's Crib is an album by jazz pianist Sonny Clark recorded for the Blue Note label. It features Donald Byrd, Curtis Fuller, John Coltrane, Paul Chambers, and Art Taylor. The first half of the album comprises three jazz standards, while the second half contains two original compositions by Clark. One writer has compared the album to Coltrane's Blue Train, recorded a fortnight later and which features Fuller and Chambers, as the epitome of the Blue Note sound in the late 1950s.

Recorded in 1957, Sonny's Crib features a front line of Curtis Fuller, Donald Byrd, and John Coltrane with Sonny Clark on piano, Art Taylor on drums, and Paul Chambers on bass. Truly still a bebop recording, done a full year before the landmark Cool Struttin' session, nonetheless the set produced some awesome readings of classic tunes, like the opener, "With a Song in My Heart," with one of the knottiest Byrd solos ever

Sonny's Crib is a very pleasing recording from the sadly overlooked pianist Sonny Clark that works very well as a representative piece of the Blue Note catalogue at the time, framing all the characteristics that made that label so successful. It is essentially a blowing session, and to some extent, a preparation for Coltrane's seminal Blue Train, which was recorded several weeks after Sonny's Crib and featured the same ensemble with Lee Morgan subbing for Donald Byrd and Kenny Drew replacing Sonny Clark.

After Sonny’s Crib, Sonny Clark recorded six more sessions as a leader for Blue Note, including, a year later, what many critics perceive as his definitive album, Cool Struttin’. Always in demand, Clark also played as a sideman on a slew of sessions for the label, including albums by Lee Morgan, Jackie McLean, Stanley Turrentine, Grant Green and Dexter Gordon. Though diminutive in terms of his height (he stood at only five foot, five inches), Sonny Clark was undoubtedly a man of substantial stature in the jazz world
