Fantôme is the sixth Japanese studio album by Japanese–American recording artist Utada Hikaru.

The Japanese American pop idol has always had an affinity for progression, her music slowly transforming album to album in slow growths that lean on the best of her previous work. As Distance took the sound of First Love and contextualized it with more complicated melodies, Ultra Blue ripped the harsh electronics of Exodus and applied them to the delicate, nuanced songwriting of Deep River. With Fantôme, she has not so much as morphed as she has expanded, seven years of life pushing her artistic character into new if not familiar territories

Released September 28, 2016. It is her 6th Japanese studio album (9th overall) and the first she’s made with original material since 2009’s This is the One. The album was dedicated to Hikaru’s late mother and former enka singer and actress Keiko Fuji, who committed suicide in 2013. The album contains 3 previously released singles: Sakura Nagashi, Hanataba wo Kimi ni and Manatsu no Tōriame, as well as 8 brand new tracks.

After years away, Utada Hikaru has made her official comeback to the music industry with new album Fantome and, with that, the Billboard charts. The Japanese-American megastar, who holds the record for largest-selling album ever in Japan, released Fantome on Wednesday, Sept. 28, marking her first full-length album since 2009's This Is the One (Utada's second album in English) and her first Japanese LP since 2008. Despite a shortened time period to rack up chart points with the atypical release date (most albums are released on Fridays to coincide with the new global release date and.
