Fleetwood Mac - Then Play On flac album

Then Play On is the third studio album by British blues rock band Fleetwood Mac, released on 19 September 1969. It was the first of their original albums to feature Danny Kirwan and the last with Peter Green. Jeremy Spencer did not feature on the album apart from "a couple of piano things" (according to Mick Fleetwood in Q magazine in 1990).

Then Play On (2013 Remaster). I somehow missed this album through the decades. I used to like BARE TREES & MYSTERY TO ME back in the old vinyl days, but I came too late to the party for early Peter Green Mac. I enjoyed his late 70s album IN THE SKIES, but still didn’t go all the way back in the way-back machine. I knew he had written Black Magic Woman & the classic thrasher Oh Well. All of the drop outs on previous CD versions are gone. This is particularly noticeable on "My Dream" which always sounded like an 8-track tape jostling against the tape head.

Like Then Play On, their final album with Peter Green. This album shows the band moving in a more eclectic direction than before. I believe that reflects in the fact the British blues scene was winding down. Many bands like Ten Years After and Savoy Brown were turning to rock and roll, John Mayall retiring the Bluesbreakers name, and Jethro Tull (yes, they started off blues too) became more eclectic. In fact, many of the songs on Then Play On aren't even really all that blues. It's an odd piece, the first part is in the blues vein, and the second part is strange, very un-Fleetwood Mac-like, an acoustic piece with medieval influences. This part gave me the creeps. But if you have the first pressing, you don't get this, instead you get "When You Say", not one of the better songs Kirwan wrote, but again, it shows how Fleetwood Mac were already moving away from the blues, in 1969. So if you think Rumours is vastly overexposed, don't care much for Stevie Nicks, like to hear some great blues and rock, I can recommend Then Play On to you.
