The Hunting of the Snark (An Agony in 8 Fits) is a poem written by English writer Lewis Carroll. It is typically categorised as a nonsense poem. Written from 1874 to 1876, the poem borrows the setting, some creatures, and eight portmanteau words from Carroll's earlier poem "Jabberwocky" in his children's novel Through the Looking-Glass (1871). As for the word "Snark", Carroll did not give it any meaning. The word "snarking" had been used in 1866 to describe a sound.

Mike Batt – The Hunting of the Snark (1986). Jack Bruce – Willpower (1989). The Sisters of Mercy – Vision Thing (1990). Flairck – Sleight of Hand (1986). Jack Bruce – Somethin' Else (1992). Jack Bruce – Cities of the Heart (1993). The Lenny MacDowell Project – Lost Paradise (1993). Artists For Nature – Earthrise, The Rainforest Album (1994). Colm Wilkinson – Stage Heroes (1994). Juliane Werding – Du Schaffst Es (1994).

Mike Batt stepped into Jeff Wayne's realm of expertise with this progressive/pop work (sometimes referred to as The Hunting of the Snark), based on Lewis Carroll's nonsense poetry. The Hunting of the Snark recalls Wayne's The War of the Worlds with its all-star cast and enveloping concept.

In anticipation of getting it made eventually, I have started cutting together a "dummy" version of the show using backing tracks from the original album interspersed with midi signals taken from my orchestra score (I use FINALE software to orchestrate and it plays back the score. I can assign samples to the midi sounds to approximate the orchestra and rhythm.
