Californication is the seventh studio album by American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was released on June 8, 1999, on Warner Bros. Records and was produced by Rick Rubin. Californication marked the return of John Frusciante, who had previously appeared on Mother's Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik, to replace Dave Navarro as the band's guitarist.

Californication is the seventh studio album by American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, and their third on Warner Bros. Records with production by Rick Rubin. Released in 1999, it marked the return of guitarist John Frusciante, who had previously appeared on Mother’s Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Californication is the Chili Peppers' most commercially successful studio release internationally, with over 15 million copies sold worldwide, and more than 5 million in the United States alone. As of 2002, the album had sold over 4 million copies in Europe. The record produced several hits for the band, including Otherside, Californication and the Grammy Award-winning Scar Tissue.

Creatively, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have been spinning their wheels for quite some time now. It’s been 10 years since John Frusciante left the fold for a second time, and the current iteration of the band has next to nothing to show for it. If you could hum a single song from either of the last two RHCP albums, then you either have the asterisk tattooed on you somewhere or you have some elephant level of memory. In fact, if you want to go back to a record where the band last truly held the cultural zeitgeist in a stranglehold, you have to go back quite a while. Californication turns 20 this.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers of the quadruple-platinum smash Blood Sugar Sex Magic returned revitalized and reunited with Californication four year later, which was perhaps their most anticipated album ever. Most importantly, Californication marked the homecoming of guitarist John Frusciante, a key ingredient in the group's most successful albums. His return signaled the energized re-emergence of one of rock's premier emotional, powerful and exciting bands.
