NSBM is not seen as a distinct genre, but as a neo-völkisch movement within black metal  . Many artists express extreme anti-Christian and misanthropic views, advocating various forms of Satanism or ethnic paganism. In the 1990s, members of the scene were responsible for a spate of church burnings and murders. Their debut album Welcome To Hell released in 1981 was followed by 1982's Black Metal. Venom's image lyrics and musical style were copied and inspired by bands such as Metallica, Slayer, Hellhammer, Bathory, Exodus and Possessed to name a few. In the early 1990s, the early Norwegian black metal scene developed the style into a distinct genre.
