The Harry Smith-compiled three-volume Anthology of American Folk Music set, originally released in the 1950s and reissued to much brouhaha in 1997, was one of the most important records in launching the folk revival. It was not well known, though, that Smith compiled a fourth volume that was unissued. Track Listing - Disc 1. Sample.

Jazz-rock fusion extended that tradition, from the startling syntheses of Miles Davis and Weather Report to the more fluid mixture of jazz and pop heard in jam bands (Medeski, Martin and Wood), acid jazz, hip-hop jazz, and smooth jazz. The color insert traces jazz in a dierent way: through the graphic styles of album covers, sheet music, and other desiderata. These evocative images illustrate the marketing of written and recorded jazz, from sheet music covers of the 1920s to CD covers of today. Jazz includes a four-CD set that provides a comprehensive overview of the music through seventy-five selections, combining acknowledged classics (Miles Daviss So What, Coleman Hawkinss Body and Soul, Louis Armstrongs West End Blues) with several unusual but illuminating tracks, ranging from a 1916 recording by Wilbur Sweatman to a pair of tracks by Jason Moran.
I-III, volume IV does not disappoint. This anthology is relevant and pleasing to the ear and makes a fine addition to ANY collection of American music. Aside from wondrous historic music 'Volume 4' is another loving tribute to the eccentric genius of the irascible Harry Smith. Without this offering, you certainly don't have the entire 'Anthology', and although the packaging doesn't match the Smithsonian set, it is very nicely done--just don't try to put it in your plastic CD rack. It's hard to imagine that anything could be better than the original Folkways box set (Volumes 1-3), but this album is. Everything I love about V1-3, there is even more of here. The eerie juxtaposition of darkness and jubilation pretty much sums up the whole 20th Century in an hour and a half.
The only Jazz variant I wasn’t wild about was fusion, which from some of the examples he played seemed just like a lot of noise. No beat, no rhythm and no blues. I highly recommend this class for anyone that wants to learn more about Jazz and the different versions it has undergone. I only wish Bill Messenger made another more comprehensive series on jazz. Jul 12, 2018 Behrooz Parhami rated it really liked it. Let me begin by listing the lecture titles, which provide a good sense of what the course is about. This is a great Teaching Company course that introduces the listener to the world of jazz music. I still prefer classical music by far, but I enjoyed learning about this other musical world.
