Haitink's early Tchaikovsky set was one of the recordings that addicted me to classical music(on an LP:my age is showing). If you're one who stops and starts with Mravinsky, stop here. Haitink has never been a fiery type, but his output has been consistently decent, and many times more than that. All I can tell you is to do what I did 40 years ago-cue the 5th and crank it. Great recording, powerful performance. But overall, this a great set for the Tchaikovsky beginner and enthusiast. If you're looking for a great album of the Ballet Suites to compliment some missing orchestral works, check out James Levine's recording with the Vienna Philharmonic under Deutsche Grammophon. The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is a symphony orchestra in the Netherlands, based at the Amsterdam Royal Concertgebouw (concert hall). Considered one of the world's leading orchestras. Queen Beatrix conferred the "Royal" title upon the orchestra in 1988. The Concertgebouw opened on 11 April 1888. The Concertgebouw Orchestra was established several months later, and gave its first concert in the Concertgebouw on 3 November 1888, conducted by the orchestra's first chief conductor, Willem Kes.

And yet there are many good reasons to prefer the w cycle. For one thing, there's Haitink. A consummate professional with less ego and arguably more integrity than Karajan and more sincerity than Solti, Haitink was more than willing to let Bruckner's symphonies unfold in their own good time. For another thing, there's the Concertgebouw. A virtuoso ensemble with as much polish as the Berlin and less aggression than the Chicago, the Concertgebouw was more than willing to efface its virtuosity and lets Bruckner's symphonies reveal themselves
