Cal Tjader - At Grace Cathedral flac album

The Grace Cathedral Concert ‎(CD, Album, RE, RM). Fantasy. Like so many artists who left us too soon. This album is an intriguing cross of styles dating to the 'movie mood music' of the 50's/60's and a more modern smooth production of the late 70's/80's. A nice award-winning find that goes well with sitting in a darkened room and sipping a bourbon. One can almost smell the cigarette smoke when I listen to this.

Grace Cathedral is an Episcopal cathedral on Nob Hill, San Francisco, California. It is the cathedral church of the Episcopal Diocese of California. The cathedral is famed for its mosaics by Jan Henryk De Rosen, a replica of Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise, two labyrinths, varied stained glass windows, Keith Haring AIDS Chapel altarpiece, and medieval and contemporary furnishings, as well as its forty-four bell carillon, three organs, and choirs.

Unlike Vince Guaraldi's Grace Cathedral concert, vibraphonist Cal Tjader's was not a religious event. In fact, this quintet outing (which includes Lonnie Hewitt on electric piano and the young Poncho Sanchez on congas) is a fairly typical concert for the era, despite the location. As it turned out, Tjader was a replacement for Guaraldi, who had originally been scheduled but had recently passed away

Bishop James Pike, who I had met, endorsed these great series of jazz efforts.
