At 9:20, the band gets to stretch, and indeed they do on every number - there are only three cuts on each of the original Slug's volumes. Doesn't matter, this is a taste of what's to come. McBee's "Felicite," which starts as an utterly lovely lilting ballad, follows with languid melody lines by Tolliver before it turns inside out and becomes an intervallic exploration for a few seconds before coming back to that rich melody.

Their second album "Impact" expanded the big band's sound with eight strings on several tunes. James Spaulding, Charles McPherson and George Coleman join Tolliver and Cowell as soloists. From these, it was thought that the trail ran cold for this band until the mid 2000s. But in preparation for this reissue, Charles ran across a tape of a big band workshop/broadcast that he did in 1979 with NDR Big Band in Hamburg, Germany. Its legacy begins with this Mosaic Select. Tolliver was born in Jacksonville, Florida, where, as a child, he received the gift of a cornet from his grandmother. He attended Howard University in the early 1960s as a pharmacy major, when he decided to pursue music as a career and return home to New York City.

Strona Główna Jazz Charles Tolliver Charles Tolliver - Mosaic Select 20 (2005). Charles Tolliver - Mosaic Select 20 (2005). In the early 1970s, trumpeter Charles Tolliver trafficked compellingly in the overlap between hard-bop and the avant-garde, leading an unconventional big band and an exploratory quartet called Music Inc. He documented both groups on his own self-sustaining label, Strata-East. com, eschews the big band material for a pair of live quartet engagements previously heard on three Strata-East LPs, now unfortunately out of print. It's possible that album, too, will get the reissue treatment, as Mosaic cofounder Michael Cuscuna hints in his liner essay. One can only hope so, as Tolliver's music emphatically deserves to be heard.

Talk about Charles Tolliver Big Band - Mosaic Select

Description from Mosaic website:"The Charles Tolliver Big Band has come to be known for its intricate, layered writing, charging rhythms and exciting soloists. The band's roots trace back to 1970 when Tolliver recorded "Music Inc. & Big Band" for his Strata-East label. He and Stanley Cowell were the composers and principal soloists for this ground-breaking album, which represented the new approach to big band writing since the emergence of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra five years earlier.Their second album "Impact" expanded the big band's sound with eight strings on several tunes. He secured the rights and the master tape and is released for the first time in this set.In recent year, the band has reformed and returned with a vengeance, touring and recording for Blue Note (2007) and Half Note (2009). Its legacy begins with this Mosaic Select."
