Someone had written "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," possibly while drunk, on a demo copy. A record company executive saw it and decided to use it as the title, since it sounded mystical and Eastern spirituality was big at the time, with The Beatles going to India and The Rolling Stones experimenting with Indian instruments. Doug Ingle did not intend it this way when he wrote the song, but he album version is over 17 minutes long. Barry from New York, NcIron Butterfly released a live album in 1970, which featured another side long epic version of This version was recorded sometime in 1969. If you listen carefully during the drum solo, you can hear a very exuberant crowd of high school age boys and girls cheering and chanting along. Billy from Jefferson, NjBoth the melody and words(in a garden of eden) were ripped from Donovans "Sunshine Superman".

In a gadda da vida, baby Don't you know that I'll always be true? Oh, won't you come with me And take my hand? Oh, won't you come with me And walk this land? Please take my hand. In a gadda da vida, honey Don't you know that I'm lovin' you? In a gadda da vida, baby Don't you know that I'll always be true? Oh, won't you come with me And take my hand? Oh, won't you come with me And walk this land? Please take my hand
Iron Butterfly – In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. Release date: 14th June 1968. Not a lot was happening in music today in 1968. No one was making headline news. During a live interview, Jane Asher announced she was breaking up with her boyfriend Paul McCartney. Hugh Masekela was at on the . singles chart with Grazing In The Grass, and Cream started a four-week run at on the album chart with Wheels On Fire. A little further down the listings, Iron Butterfly’s second album, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, entered the album chart for the first time – with a bullet a. .They never troubled the charts, but the original ‘In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida’ album has the distinction of being the first album to go Platinum (shipping more than 1,000,000 copies) in the US, when the Platinum Award was instituted in 1976. Or as Doug Ingle might say: Alba-Mis-A-Pladdina.
Over the years, Iron Butterfly's most famous song, "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," has become a comedic punchline, a whipping boy for the overblown and pretentious aspects of rock 'n' roll. But strip away the years of abuse and there's a classic. Iron Butterfly grew out of the Los Angeles scene of the mid-'60s. Their sound blended the dramatic sense of the early Doors with the garage spirit of the Seeds and the Music Machine.
